Diagnosis
Companion Cards
Co-designed by health care professionals and people living with type 1 diabetes
What’s in the toolkit?
Each toolkit is made up of 36 cards grouped into 6 sets that explore the multiple facets of living with a chronic condition. Each set contains 3 patient stories, 1 expert guidance card and 1 coping strategy to put into practice. A QR code links to a digital platform for more information on that topic.
. . .
How to use it?
It can work alone but is best used as a conversation starter between the healthcare team, the person with T1D and their support network.
Who is it for?
The toolkit is designed for adults newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, as a way to break down the information overload and enable them to freely explore what matters to them most.

What People Are Saying
"The visuals make tangible an invisible condition, I find myself nodding, sighing and laughing in recognition."
- David Hocking, person living with Type 1 diabetes, Edinburgh
“My dad didn't know how to talk about my diagnosis so acted like it didn’t exist. These cards spread out on the kitchen table gave us a place to start. He now gets it"
— Jenny Martins, person living with Type 1 Diagnosis, Manchester
Each diagnosis is as unique as the person experiencing it
- that's why we've organised the toolkit into non-linear, stage appropriate sets. So people can pick their learning path by what matters to them most.

“The colour coded themes make it really easy for my patients to focus on one element at a time. I know some patients even keep their favourite cards in their wallet as a reminder or motivator"
— Katy Guillford, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Glasgow
Beyond the cards
The cards work on their own but for those who want more information on a topic or stories from the community, each set has a QR code that links you directly into an immersive virtual portal.
